TNT The New Tenderloin: Campaign to take back our neighborhood

Hello Tenderloin Community! I’d like to thank those of you that were involved in the Safety March last month. We were able to show city officials, media, and city residents that the Tenderloin is indeed a thriving and active community! As a result of the march and coverage in the media, TNT has become a buzzword in the community.

TNT, which stands for The New Tenderloin, is a collaboration of community service providers, groups, business/property owners, and residents. If you would like more information about joining TNT please contact me and we’ll add your name to the contact list. Some of the actions TNT is currently working on are:

***** 10,000 signature petition for city officials (to sign, please go to http://www.PetitionOnline.com/TNT/petition.html)

***** Public Safety Hearing in July

***** Improved visibility/enforcement of school zones

***** Traffic calming on Leavenworth

***** Organized Court Watch

***** Safe Passage for children (Boys/Girls Club)

If you would like more information about these or other efforts please email or phone me! (415) 538-8100 x 204 or dhilliard@iisf.org

Last month, Safety Network was a part of the following events/meetings: May 8th- Tenderloin March For Safety, May 9th- Safety Network Community Leadership Awards Ceremony, May 12th- Springtime in the Tenderloin Family Event/Street Closure, May 15th- Community Court meeting at DA’s Office

May 17th- TNT Follow Up Meeting, May 21st- Tenderloin Community Court. If you are interested in inviting the Safety Network to your event or meeting, please let me know!

Congratulations to Elaine Zamora on receiving the Safety Network Community Leadership Award for the Tenderloin District! She has exemplified true leadership and tenacity in improving our neighborhood. Thanks for all you do Elaine!

On a sadder note, I’m grieved by the up rise in senseless violence on our streets and in our buildings. In 2006, the Tenderloin had 6 documented homicides. Currently, we have surpassed last year’s number, and each day, the violence rages on. Will you be part of the solution? For ways to get involved, please review the upcoming neighborhood meetings by following this link. (www.safetynetwork.org click on “In Your District”, then “Tenderloin”)

We may not see changes overnight, but in due time, with determination and tenacity, we can all create The New Tenderloin!
